Which leads on nicely to our EP of ghost tunes.. they’ve been haunting us here at ODT manor for some years.. some tunes even followed us all the way from Liverpool and the year 2005, so we decided to have an exorcism in the form of an EP called Lost Illuminations From The Last Manned Outpost. Its officially loose on November 21st.

it can be downloaded for free here..

This generosity was brought to you by the good people at I Blame The Parents Records.

“Never get off the boat” said Martin Sheen in Coppola´s seminal war film Apocalypse Now. With this advice in the forefront of our minds we have decided to return to Tamesis Dock, the boat where we launched our second album It Is The Mercy (still available from www.iblametheparentsrecords.com for the barely credible price of £10!) and have an almighty Halloween shindig on the 28th of October. There will be live music, dancing, party games, a prize for the best costume (costumes are encouraged but by no means compulsory) and a DJ spinning the finest music until the wee wee hours. Best of all it´s free to get in! How can you resist such an alluring proposition? The full details are on the Facebook event which can be found here http://on.fb.me/p7A802

See you all there!

Discounting High school bands and solo work. It seems a simple proposition at first but it’s actually quite hard to come up with more than one or two. The most obvious one (to me at least) would be Josh Homme as Queens of the Stone Age are generally agreed to be better than Kyuss. I timidly suggested New Order but was quickly shouted down by the rest of the room and, to be honest, I prefer Joy Division but was trying to play Devil’s Advocate.

I’ve run the quandary around in my head for the past few days thinking it would make a pretty good subject for a blog and trying to define the parameters of what qualifies as a second band. Bands which keep the same core line-up but simply change their name (Kaiser Chiefs, White Lies…) can’t really be counted. But what of bands who change a key member of the line-up? For example, it could be argued that Dio era Black Sabbath is superior to Rainbow but inferior to Ozzy era Black Sabbath so does that count for Dio but not the rest of the band? What about supergroups? The Reindeer Section are better than Snow Patrol but not as good as most of the other bands they borrowed members from. Are Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young better than Buffalo Springfield?

I threw the question open to Twitter this morning and was met by a wave of interesting responses. Almost immediately @martinwolfenden said “Paul McCartney” bringing to mind Alan Partridge’s assertion that Wings were “the band The Beatles could have been!” @majorbisho said that he liked The Seahorses better than The Stone Roses so John Squire was better second time. I think he might be alone on that one but I guess the whole topic is subjective so it’s all a matter of opinion.

@mrs_kensington pointed out that Garbage was, in fact, Shirley Manson’s third band but I would counter that the relative lack of success of her first two bands would possibly invoke the “high school bands” rule. @handofglory pointed out that in the 60s a great number of bands tended to mix and match members using Deep Purple as an example. @PhilthD suggested Eyes Adrift for all members except Krist Novoselic, Elastica (good call!) and that you could make a case for A Perfect Circle. @cripesonfriday said “it’s all about personal taste but I’d say Bobby Gillespie and Mani both went to better bands with Primal Scream.” and I have to say I’d agree with him on both counts. But what do you think?

As I pointed out to @multiclassgeek this morning, I want this blog to be a starting point for debate rather than a definitive list of ‘whose second band was better.’ What I would like to know is if there’s any bands about which there is a general consensus. So let me know your thoughts. If you’re sat there thinking “This guy’s an idiot. OBVIOUSLY Mike & The Mechanics are superior to Genesis!” Then drop me a line: gordy@theoutdoortypes.co.uk or @GordyODT on Twitter. I shall compile the responses at a later date.

Gordy x

P.S. Mike & The Mechanics are NOT superior to Genesis.

No gigs on the horizon, no releases since It Is The Mercy (still available from www.iblametheparentsrecords.com) and nothing happening on the blog. What are these guys doing? Swanning it up in The Bahamas with all their rock star pals no doubt.

Au contraire my cynical chums, The Outdoor Types have in fact been working hard crafting a wagonload of brand new tunes for your delectation. To that end we have recruited a new member! Ms Caroline Humphries will be filling the role of saxophonist from here on out and, frankly, I can’t wait for you guys to hear the new tunes cos they’re sounding pretty awesome.

But that’s not all! I’m also delighted to announce that we will soon be releasing an EP made up of recordings from all over the career of the ODT some from as far back as 2005. No sub-standard rejects here though, they’re all top quality. It should be winging it’s way to you guys in early November.

I’m also going to be making a concerted effort to keep this blog a lot more up to date with a regular post from Luke, Richie, Caz or myself every Thursday. So there you go, call off the search party: The Outdoor Types are alive and well and preparing to unleash a whole new batch of awesomeness on an unsuspecting world.

Following the tragic demise of the beloved Space Cruiser (which, at time of writing, is available on eBay) we’ve had to hire a suitable stand-in. Due to the last-minute nature of our booking all that was available was a 2010 Renault Espace. Which is absolutely enormous. The extra legroom provided by the luxurious nature of our hire car would prove itself useful in the mammoth task we were about to undertake. Exeter, Cardiff, Liverpool and then back down to London all in the space of four days. But before all that we had to get out of London which proved quite difficult. Once we’d left the chaos of the north circular behind we made excellent time and arrived in Exeter with time to spare. We had swift coffee in a place called Boston Tea Party which Luke had frequented during his student days. Seeing a poster for our gig on the notice board was a pretty awesome moment. During Luke’s time at university in Exeter he saw some pretty incredible bands at The Cavern so we were really excited to be playing there. The gig was wicked fun. Everyone that was there got thoroughly rocked and we had some pretty enjoyable back and forth banter with the crowd. With two dates down the next day would be the shortest leg of the tour when pop up to Cardiff in the mighty Espace.

The plan was that this was to be a dry run for the second leg of the tour which will take in Exeter, Cardiff and Liverpool later this week. Drive down on Saturday, camp at a farm in Henfield, play the gig on Sunday, drive back on bank holiday Monday. What could possibly go wrong?

Luke and I arrived at the campsite on saturday evening and met everyone else in the pub, getting there just in time to watch an excellent exhibition match between Barcelona and some other team whose name escapes me right now. We pulled up to the venue the following day not knowing quite what to expect. As it turns out, The Green Door Store (@greendoorstore on Twitter) is a very cool cellar style bar set in the railway arches beneath Brighton station.

The gig went brilliantly. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick off the tour. There was a great turn-out and the audience really got on board, which is always nice. Afterwards we headed back to the campsite where we imbibed into the wee hours whilst playing the celebrity alphabet game for an exceedingly long time.

On bank holiday monday Luke and I said goodbye to the rest of the crew, picked up my girlfriend Wendy, who had been staying at her cousin’s house in Shoreham-by-Sea, then went for a mooch round the record shops and vintage boutiques of Brighton. We left at about six o’clock and after we’d been travelling for a while we noticed that the heating on Luke’s 1987 Toyota Space Cruiser wasn’t working. Assuming that the heating unit had packed up and not knowing any better we carried on. It was only when I said I smelt burning that we realised something was seriously awry. We pulled over to the hard shoulder of the M23 with a now quite considerable amount of smoke billowing from beneath the once mighty Space Cruiser. By sheer luck, Luke had recently upgraded his current account to one that included AA roadside assistance so he called them up and in a little over 10 minutes a mechanic arrived. He took a quick look at the engine and confirmed our worst fears: the engine’s head gasket had blown.

A long and intense journey then followed where we were towed back to Tufnell Park via central London. Once we arrived we had to carry all the gear up a hill from where we’d parked the Space Cruiser to Luke’s house. By the time we’d moved all the instruments and equipment up the hill it was gone Eleven and Wendy and I still had to get the tube back to Tooting with all our luggage.

So Brighton was great until we tried to leave and then it all went a bit wrong. Here’s hoping the rest of the tour is a tad less dramatic!

Gordy

The Outdoor Types will be continuing their tour (though probably not in the Space Cruiser) on:

2nd of June at The Cavern in Exeter

3rd of June at The Buffalo Bar in Cardiff

and 4th of June at Bumper in Liverpool
